1 খ্রীষ্টে আমি সত্যি কথাই বলছি—মিথ্যা বলছি না, পবিত্র আত্মায় আমার বিবেক তা সমর্থন করছে যে—
2 আমার গভীর দুঃখ আছে ও হৃদয়ে আমি নিরন্তর মর্মযন্ত্রণা অনুভব করছি।
3 এমনকি, যারা আমার স্বজাতি, আমার সেই ভাইবোনেদের জন্য আমি নিজে খ্রীষ্ট থেকে বিছিন্ন হয়ে অভিশপ্ত হতেও রাজি হতাম!
4 তারা হল ইস্রায়েল জাতি। দত্তকপুত্রের অধিকার তাদেরই, স্বর্গীয় মহিমাও তাদের, বিভিন্ন নিয়ম, বিধানলাভ, মন্দির-কেন্দ্রিক উপাসনা ও সব প্রতিশ্রুতি তাদেরই;
5 পিতৃপুরুষেরাও তাদের এবং খ্রীষ্টের মানবীয় বংশপরিচয় তাদের মধ্যেই খুঁজে পাওয়া যায়, যিনি সর্বোপরি বিরাজমান ঈশ্বর, চির প্রশংসনীয়! আমেন।
6 এরকম নয় যে, ঈশ্বরের বাক্য ব্যর্থ হয়েছে। কারণ ইস্রায়েল বংশজাত সকলেই ইস্রায়েলী নয়।
7 আবার অব্রাহামের বংশধর বলে তারা সকলেই যে তাঁর সন্তান, তাও নয়। কিন্তু বলা হয়েছিল, “ইস্‌হাকের মাধ্যমেই তোমার বংশ পরিচিত হবে।”
8 অন্যভাবে বলা যায়, স্বাভাবিকভাবে জাত সন্তানেরা ঈশ্বরের সন্তান নয়, কিন্তু প্রতিশ্রুতির সন্তানেরাই অব্রাহামের বংশধর বলে বিবেচিত হয়।
9 কারণ এভাবে প্রতিশ্রুতি দেওয়া হয়েছিল: “পূর্ব-নির্ধারিত সময়েই আমি ফিরে আসব, তখন সারার এক পুত্র হবে।”
10 শুধু তাই নয়, রেবেকার সন্তানদেরও একমাত্র ও একই পিতা ছিলেন, তিনি আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষ ইস্‌হাক।
11 তবুও, সেই দুজন যমজের জন্ম হওয়ার পূর্বে ও তাদের ভালোমন্দ কোনো কাজ করার পূর্বেই মনোনয়নের ব্যাপারে ঈশ্বরের অভিপ্রায় যেন স্থির থাকে,
12 কাজের ফলস্বরূপ নয়, কিন্তু যিনি আহ্বান করেন তাঁর ইচ্ছার দ্বারা—সারাকে বলা হয়েছিল, “বড়ো ছেলে ছোটো ছেলের সেবা করবে।”
13 যেমন লেখা আছে: “যাকোবকে আমি ভালোবেসেছি, কিন্তু এষৌকে আমি ঘৃণা করেছি।”
14 তাহলে, এখন আমরা কী বলব? ঈশ্বর কি অবিচার করেছেন? তা কখনোই নয়!
15 কারণ তিনি মোশিকে বলেছেন, “যার প্রতি আমি দয়া দেখাতে চাই, তার প্রতি আমি দয়া দেখাব, এবং যার প্রতি আমি করুণা করতে চাই, তার প্রতি আমি করুণা করব।”
16 সেই কারণে, তা মানুষের ইচ্ছা বা চেষ্টার উপরে নির্ভর করে না, কিন্তু ঈশ্বরের করুণার উপর তা নির্ভর করে।
17 কারণ শাস্ত্র ফরৌণকে বলে, “আমি এই বিশেষ উদ্দেশ্যেই তোমাকে উন্নত করেছি, যেন আমি তোমাকে আমার ক্ষমতা দেখাতে পারি ও সমগ্র পৃথিবীতে আমার নাম প্রচারিত হয়।”
18 সেই কারণে, ঈশ্বর যার প্রতি দয়া করতে চান, তার প্রতি তিনি দয়া করেন, কিন্তু যাকে কঠিন করতে চান, তাকে কঠিন করেন।
19 তোমাদের মধ্যে কেউ হয়তো আমাকে বলবে, “তাহলে কেন ঈশ্বর এসব সত্ত্বেও আমাদের প্রতি দোষারোপ করেন? কারণ, কে তাঁর ইচ্ছার প্রতিরোধ করতে পারে?”
20 কিন্তু ওহে মানুষ, তুমি কে যে ঈশ্বরের প্রতিবাদ করো? “সৃষ্টবস্তু কি তার নির্মাতাকে একথা বলতে পারে, ‘তুমি কেন আমাকে এরকম গঠন করেছ?’ ”
21 একই মাটির তাল থেকে অভিজাত উদ্দেশে ব্যবহারের জন্য কিছু পাত্র এবং সাধারণ ব্যবহারের জন্য কিছু পাত্র নির্মাণ করার অধিকার কি কুমোরের নেই?
22 কী হবে, যদি ঈশ্বর তাঁর ক্রোধ ও ক্ষমতা প্রকাশ করার জন্য ধ্বংসের উদ্দেশে নির্দিষ্ট তাঁর ক্রোধের পাত্রদের অসীম ধৈর্য সহকারে সহ্য করেন?
23 আর এতেই বা কী, তিনি যদি তাঁর করুণার পাত্রদের, যাদের মহিমাপ্রাপ্তির জন্য তিনি পূর্ব থেকেই প্রস্তুত করেছিলেন, তাদের কাছে তাঁর মহিমার ঐশ্বর্য প্রকাশ করেন—
24 এমনকি, আমাদের কাছেও, যাদের তিনি কেবলমাত্র ইহুদি জাতির মধ্য থেকে নয়, কিন্তু অইহুদিদের মধ্য থেকেও আহ্বান করেছেন?
25 হোশেয়ের গ্রন্থে যেমন তিনি বলেছেন: “যারা আমার প্রজা নয়, তাদের আমি ‘আমার প্রজা’ বলব; আর যে আমার প্রেমের পাত্রী নয়, তাকে আমি ‘আমার প্রিয়তমা’ বলে ডাকব।”
26 আবার, “এরকম ঘটবে, যে স্থানে তাদের বলা হত, ‘তোমরা আমার প্রজা নও,’ তাদের বলা হবে, ‘জীবন্ত ঈশ্বরের পুত্র।’ ”
27 যিশাইয় ইস্রায়েল সম্পর্কে উচ্চকণ্ঠে ঘোষণা করেন, “ইস্রায়েলীদের জনসংখ্যা যদি সমুদ্রতীরের বালির মতোও হয়, কেবলমাত্র অবশিষ্টাংশই পরিত্রাণ পাবে।
28 কারণ প্রভু দ্রুতগতিতে ও চরমভাবে পৃথিবীতে তাঁর শাস্তি কার্যকর করবেন।”
29 যিশাইয় যেমন পূর্বেই একথা বলেছিলেন: “সর্বশক্তিমান প্রভু যদি আমাদের জন্য কয়েকজন বংশধর অবশিষ্ট না রাখতেন, আমাদের অবস্থা হত সদোমের মতো, আমরা হতাম ঘমোরার মতো।”
30 তাহলে আমরা কী বলব? অইহুদিরা, যারা ধার্মিকতা লাভের জন্য চেষ্টা করেনি কিন্তু তা পেয়েছে, তা এমন ধার্মিকতা, যা বিশ্বাসের দ্বারা পাওয়া যায়।
31 কিন্তু ইস্রায়েল, যারা ধার্মিকতার বিধান অনুসরণ করেছে, তা তারা অর্জন করতে পারেনি।
32 কেন পারেনি? কারণ তারা বিশ্বাসের দ্বারা তার অনুসরণ না করে বিভিন্ন কাজের দ্বারা তা করেছে। তারা সেই “প্রতিবন্ধকতার পাথরে” হোঁচট খেয়েছে।
33 যেমন লেখা আছে, “দেখো, আমি সিয়োনে এক পাথর রেখেছি, যাতে মানুষ হোঁচট খাবে, আর একটি শিলা স্থাপন করেছি, যার কারণে তাদের পতন হবে, আর যে কেউ তাঁর উপরে বিশ্বাস করবে, সে কখনও লজ্জিত হবে না।”
