1 প্রথম থেকেই যা ছিল বিদ্যমান, যা আমরা শুনেছি, যা আমরা নিজের চোখে দেখেছি, যা আমরা নিরীক্ষণ করেছি এবং নিজের হাতে যা স্পর্শ করেছি, জীবনের সেই বাক্য সম্পর্কে আমরা ঘোষণা করছি।
2 সেই জীবন প্রকাশিত হলেন, আমরা তা প্রত্যক্ষ করেছি ও সেই বিষয়ে সাক্ষ্য দিচ্ছি। যা পিতার কাছে ছিল এবং যা আমাদের কাছে প্রকাশিত হয়েছে, আমরা সেই অনন্ত জীবনের কথা তোমাদের কাছে ঘোষণা করছি।
3 আমরা যা দেখেছি ও শুনেছি, তাই তোমাদের কাছে ঘোষণা করছি, যেন তোমরা আমাদের সঙ্গে সহভাগিতা স্থাপন করতে পারো। আর আমাদের সহভাগিতা পিতা ও তাঁর পুত্র যীশু খ্রীষ্টের সঙ্গে।
4 তোমাদের আমরা একথা লিখছি, যেন আমাদের আনন্দ সম্পূর্ণ হয়।
5 এই বাণী আমরা তাঁর কাছ থেকে শুনে তোমাদের কাছে ঘোষণা করছি: ঈশ্বর জ্যোতি; তাঁর মধ্যে অন্ধকারের লেশমাত্র নেই।
6 তাঁর সঙ্গে আমাদের সহভাগিতা আছে, এমন দাবি করেও যদি অন্ধকারে চলি, তবে আমরা মিথ্যা কথা বলি এবং সত্যে জীবনযাপন করি না।
7 কিন্তু তিনি যেমন জ্যোতিতে আছেন আমরাও যদি তেমন জ্যোতিতে জীবন কাটাই, তাহলে পরস্পরের সঙ্গে আমাদের সহভাগিতা আছে এবং তাঁর পুত্র যীশুর রক্ত সব পাপ থেকে আমাদের শুচিশুদ্ধ করে।
8 আমরা যদি নিজেদের নিষ্পাপ বলে দাবি করি, তাহলে আমরা নিজেদের প্রতারণা করি এবং সত্য আমাদের মধ্যে বাস করে না।
9 আমরা যদি আমাদের পাপস্বীকার করি, তিনি বিশ্বস্ত ও ন্যায়পরায়ণ, তাই তিনি আমাদের সব পাপ ক্ষমা করে সমস্ত অধার্মিকতা থেকে শুচিশুদ্ধ করবেন।
10 যদি আমরা বলি যে আমরা পাপ করিনি, আমরা তাঁকে মিথ্যাবাদী প্রতিপন্ন করি এবং আমাদের জীবনে তাঁর বাক্যের কোনও স্থান নেই।
