上帝在创造人类之初，就将大自然的各种元素附着在他的意志之上，并用一条诫命来考验他们。他规定，如果人遵守这条诫命，他将享有永生；但如果他不遵守，他的命运将与此相反。人就是这样被创造出来的，并立即倾向于不服从，自然而然地就会堕落。既然堕落是自然界固有的，那么想要拯救的人就必须成为消灭堕落根源的人。而要做到这一点，就必须将顺应自然的生命与已经堕落的生命结合起来，从而在消灭堕落的同时，使已经堕落的生命永垂不朽。因此，道有必要居住在一个身体里，使我们摆脱自然腐朽带来的死亡。因为，如果像你说的那样，他只是用他的意志使我们免于死亡，那么，由于他的意志，死亡确实不会降临到我们身上；但尽管如此，我们还是会再次变得堕落，因为我们体内还携带着自然的堕落。
