第 3 章：希腊神话中的荒谬
赫拉克勒斯是朱庇特之子，因三夜而闻名，因成功的劳动而被诗人赞颂。他打败了狮子，摧毁了多头九头蛇，杀死了凶猛有力的野猪，成功地杀死了敏捷的食人鸟。他将三头犬从冥府救出，彻底清除了巨大的奥根建筑中的粪便，杀死了公牛和鼻孔喷火的雄鹿。他从树上摘下金果，杀死毒蛇。出于不可告人的原因，他杀死了阿谢洛斯和客死他乡的布西里斯。他翻山越岭去取水，据说那水会说话。尽管他能做出如此伟大而又众多的事迹，但被萨提尔的铙钹震晕，被女人的爱征服，被大笑的吕达击打臀部，他是多么孩子气啊！最后，他无法脱下涅索斯的外衣，点燃了自己的火堆，一命呜呼。让火神放弃嫉妒吧，如果他因年老和跛足而遭人嫌弃，而火星却因年轻和英俊而受人爱戴，他就不会嫉妒了。因此，希腊人，既然你们的众神被发现有不检点的行为，你们的英雄被证明是娘娘腔，就像你们的戏剧所依据的历史所宣称的那样--比如阿特柔斯的诅咒、提伊斯提斯的床铺、佩洛普斯家的腐败，还有达纳乌斯因仇恨而杀人，因愤怒而使埃居亚斯无子，复仇女神散播提伊斯提斯的宴会。普罗克涅至今仍在四处哀鸣，她来自雅典的妹妹被割掉了舌头，哭得死去活来。为什么还要提到伊底帕斯的痛苦、拉伊俄斯的被杀、与母亲的婚姻，以及那些既是他的兄弟又是他的儿子的相互屠杀呢？
