第 9 章：圣子为何姗姗来迟？
只要以前的时间还在，祂就允许我们被不羁的冲动所驱使，被享乐的欲望和各种情欲所牵引。这并不是因为祂以我们的罪孽为乐，而是因为祂只是忍受它们；也不是因为祂赞同那段作恶的时光，而是因为祂的目的是培养我们认识公义的心灵。这样做是为了让我们认识到，当时我们不配靠自己的行为获得生命，而现在，通过上帝的仁慈，生命将赐给我们；在表明我们靠自己无法进入上帝的国度之后，我们可以通过上帝的大能变得有能力。
然而，当我们的邪恶达到了顶点，当我们清楚地看到它的报应--惩罚和死亡--正在向我们逼近，当上帝先前为彰显他自己的仁慈和能力而指定的时刻到来时，上帝的爱是如何通过对人性的超乎寻常的关注，没有用仇恨的眼光看待我们，没有把我们推开，也没有记起我们对我们的不义，而是表现出极大的忍耐，与我们同在。祂亲自担当了我们罪孽的重担，将自己的儿子赐给我们作赎价--圣洁的为犯罪的人赎罪，无愧的为邪恶的人赎罪，公义的为不义的人赎罪，不朽坏的为朽坏的赎罪，不死的为必死的赎罪。
除了他的公义，还有什么能遮掩我们的罪孽呢？除了上帝的独生子，我们这些邪恶不敬虔的人还能靠谁称义呢？哦，甜蜜的交换！哦不可测度的行动哦，超乎寻常的益处许多人的罪恶都隐藏在一个公义的人身上，一个人的公义使许多过犯成了义！
因此，他先前使我们相信我们的本性无法获得生命，现在又揭示了救赎主，他甚至能拯救那些以前不可能拯救的东西，他希望通过这两个事实引导我们相信他的仁慈，把他当作我们的养育者、父亲、老师、顾问、医治者，我们的智慧、光明、荣誉、荣耀、能力和生命，这样我们就不会为衣食发愁了。
