Het Evangelie volgens Matteüs werd geschreven voor de Joden, omdat zij een speciaal belang hechtten aan het feit dat Christus uit het zaad van David zou zijn. Matteüs, die een nog groter verlangen had om dit punt vast te stellen, zorgde er speciaal voor om hen overtuigend bewijs te leveren dat Christus uit het zaad van David is; daarom begint hij met een verslag van Zijn genealogie.
