1 প্রত্যেক মহাযাজক মানুষের মধ্য থেকে মনোনীত হন এবং ঈশ্বর সম্পর্কিত বিষয়ে প্রতিনিধিত্ব করার ও পাপার্থক বলি উৎসর্গ করার জন্য নিযুক্ত হন।
2 যারা অজ্ঞ, যারা পথভ্রান্ত, তাদের সঙ্গে তিনি কোমল আচরণ করতে সমর্থ, যেহেতু তিনি স্বয়ং দুর্বলতার অধীন।
3 এই জন্যই তাঁর নিজের ও সেই সঙ্গে প্রজাদের সব পাপের জন্য তাঁকে বিভিন্ন বলি উৎসর্গ করতে হয়।
4 কেউ এই সম্মান স্বয়ং নিজের উপর নিতে পারে না। তাঁকে অবশ্যই ঈশ্বরের দ্বারা আহূত হতে হবে, যেমন হারোণকে হতে হয়েছিল।
5 তাই খ্রীষ্টও মহাযাজক হওয়ার মহিমা স্বয়ং গ্রহণ করেননি। কিন্তু ঈশ্বর তাঁকে বলেছিলেন, “তুমি আমার পুত্র, আজ আমি তোমার পিতা হয়েছি।”
6 অন্যত্র তিনি বলেন, “মল্কীষেদকের পরম্পরা অনুযায়ী, তুমিই চিরকালীন যাজক।”
7 যীশু তাঁর পার্থিব জীবনকালে তীব্র আর্তনাদ ও অশ্রুপাতের সঙ্গে সেই একজনের কাছে প্রার্থনা ও মিনতি উৎসর্গ করেছিলেন, যিনি তাঁকে মৃত্যু থেকে উদ্ধার করতে সমর্থ ছিলেন। তাঁর এই বিনম্র আত্মসমর্পণের জন্য তিনি উত্তর পেয়েছিলেন।
8 পুত্র হয়েও তিনি কষ্টযন্ত্রণা ভোগ করলেন ও তার মাধ্যমে বাধ্য হওয়ার শিক্ষা লাভ করলেন
9 এবং এভাবে সম্পূর্ণ সিদ্ধ হয়ে, তাঁর অনুগতদের জন্য তিনি চিরন্তন পরিত্রাণের উৎস হয়েছেন।
10 আর মল্কীষেদকের পরম্পরা অনুযায়ী ঈশ্বরের দ্বারা মহাযাজকরূপে অভিহিত হয়েছেন।
11 এ বিষয়ে আমাদের অনেক কিছুই বলার আছে, কিন্তু তোমরা শিখতে মন্থর বলে, তা ব্যাখ্যা করা কষ্টসাধ্য।
12 প্রকৃতপক্ষে, এতদিনে তোমাদের শিক্ষক হওয়া উচিত ছিল, কিন্তু ঈশ্বরের বাক্যের প্রাথমিক সত্য শিক্ষা দেওয়ার জন্য তোমাদেরই একজন শিক্ষকের প্রয়োজন। তোমাদের প্রয়োজন কঠিন খাবার নয়, কিন্তু দুধের।
