About Isaiah 6

In the year King Uzziah died, Isaiah sees the LORD enthroned, high and lifted up, His train filling the temple while seraphim cry Holy, holy, holy. Undone by the vision, Isaiah's lips are purged with a coal from the altar, he answers 'Here am I, send me,' and receives a hard commission to preach to a people who will hear but not understand.

1 In the year that king Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up; and his train filled the temple.

2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each one had six wings. With two he covered his face. With two he covered his feet. With two he flew.

3 One called to another, and said, โ€œHoly, holy, holy, is Yahweh of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory!โ€

4 The foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.

5 Then I said, โ€œWoe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell among a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, Yahweh of Armies!โ€

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar.

7 He touched my mouth with it, and said, โ€œBehold, this has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away, and your sin forgiven.โ€

8 I heard the Lordโ€™s voice, saying, โ€œWhom shall I send, and who will go for us?โ€ Then I said, โ€œHere I am. Send me!โ€

9 He said, โ€œGo, and tell this people, โ€˜You hear indeed, but donโ€™t understand; and you see indeed, but donโ€™t perceive.โ€™

10 Make the heart of this people fat. Make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn again, and be healed.โ€

11 Then I said, โ€œLord, how long?โ€ He answered, โ€œUntil cities are waste without inhabitant, and houses without man, and the land becomes utterly waste,

12 And Yahweh has removed men far away, and the forsaken places are many within the land.

13 If there is a tenth left in it, that also will in turn be consumed: as a terebinth, and as an oak, whose stock remains when they are felled; so the holy seed is its stock.โ€

What the Early Church wrote about Isaiah 6 (3)
  • “the two seraphim, which are described in Isaiah as having six wings each and as crying one to another and saying, โ€œHoly, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts,โ€ were to be understood to mean the only-begotten Son of God and the Holy Spirit.”

  • “For this reason, โ€œa coal taken up with a pair of tongsโ€ by the seraphim cleanses his lips.โ€ฆ The cleansing of his lips indicates that Isaiahโ€™s sin continually would be found only in words, but he would not have sinned in any act or deed.”

  • “Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. [Isaiah 6:9-10] These things said Esaias...”
