Story Behind the Song

These lines are selections from Felix Mendelssohn's oratorio Elijah, Op. 70, a large biblical choral work on the prophet Elijah. Mendelssohn composed it for the Birmingham Festival, where it was first performed in English in 1846, with the English text prepared by William Bartholomew from a German libretto shaped with Julius Schubring. Several movements, including 'Cast thy burden upon the Lord' and 'If with all your hearts,' have circulated independently as sacred solos or anthems.
