Worthy Is the Lamb

Words by Charles Jennens, compiler; text from Revelation 5:9, 12-13 (KJV)Music by George Frideric HandelWritten

Worthy is the Lamb that was slain,
and hath redeemed us to God by His blood,
to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength,
and honour, and glory, and blessing.

Blessing and honour, glory and power,
be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne,
and unto the Lamb,
for ever and ever.

Amen.

Story Behind the Song

"Worthy Is the Lamb" is the final chorus of George Frideric Handel's oratorio Messiah. Handel composed Messiah in 1741 to a scriptural libretto compiled by Charles Jennens, drawing this closing text from Revelation's vision of the Lamb upon the throne. The work was first performed in Dublin in 1742 and soon became one of the best-known sacred choral works in the English-speaking world.
