Story Behind the Song
The “Hallelujah” chorus is the concluding chorus of Part II of Handel’s oratorio Messiah. Charles Jennens compiled the libretto from Scripture, chiefly the King James Bible, and Handel composed the music in 1741; Messiah was first performed in Dublin in 1742. The chorus celebrates the reign of God and of Christ, drawing its text from the book of Revelation.
