1 আসার রাজত্বকালের ছত্রিশতম বছরে ইস্রায়েলের রাজা বাশা যিহূদার বিরুদ্ধে উঠে গেলেন এবং রামা নগরটি সুরক্ষিত করে সেখানে ঘাঁটি গেড়েছিলেন, যেন যিহূদার রাজা আসার এলাকা থেকে কেউ বেরিয়ে আসতে না পারে বা সেখানে ঢুকতেও না পারে।
2 আসা তখন সদাপ্রভুর মন্দির থেকে ও তাঁর নিজের প্রাসাদের কোষাগার থেকে রুপো ও সোনা নিয়ে সেগুলি অরামের রাজা সেই বিন্‌হদদের কাছে পাঠিয়ে দিলেন, যিনি দামাস্কাসে রাজত্ব করছিলেন।
3 “আপনার ও আমার মধ্যে এক চুক্তি হোক,” তিনি বললেন, “যেমনটি আমার বাবা ও আপনার বাবার মধ্যে ছিল। দেখুন, আমি আপনার কাছে রুপো ও সোনা পাঠাচ্ছি। এখন আপনি ইস্রায়েলের রাজা বাশার সঙ্গে করা আপনার চুক্তিটি ভেঙে ফেলুন, তবেই সে আমার কাছ থেকে পিছিয়ে যাবে।”
4 বিন্‌হদদ আসার কথায় রাজি হলেন এবং ইস্রায়েলের নগরগুলির বিরুদ্ধে তাঁর সৈন্যদলের সেনাপতিদের পাঠালেন। তারা ইয়োন, দান, আবেল-ময়িম ও নপ্তালির সব ভাঁড়ার-নগর জোর করে দখল করে নিয়েছিল।
5 বাশা যখন একথা শুনতে পেলেন, তিনি রামা নগরটি গড়ে তোলার কাজ বন্ধ করে দিলেন এবং তাঁর কাজ পরিত্যক্ত অবস্থায় ফেলে রেখে গেলেন।
6 পরে রাজা আসা যিহূদার সব লোকজনকে সেখানে নিয়ে এলেন, এবং তারা রামা থেকে সেইসব পাথর ও কাঠ বয়ে নিয়ে গেল, যেগুলি বাশা ব্যবহার করছিলেন। সেগুলি দিয়ে তিনি গেবা ও মিস্‌পা নগর দুটি গড়ে তুলেছিলেন।
7 সেই সময় দর্শক হনানি যিহূদার রাজা আসার কাছে এলেন এবং তাঁকে বললেন: “যেহেতু আপনি আপনার ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুর উপর নির্ভর না করে অরামের রাজার উপর নির্ভর করেছেন, তাই অরামের রাজার সৈন্যদল আপনার হাতের নাগাল এড়িয়ে পালিয়েছে।
8 বিশাল সংখ্যক রথ ও অশ্বারোহী সমেত কূশীয় ও লূবীয়েরা কি বিশাল এক সৈন্যদল ছিল না? তবুও আপনি যখন সদাপ্রভুর উপর নির্ভর করলেন, তখন তিনি আপনার হাতে তাদের সঁপে দিলেন।
9 কারণ সদাপ্রভুর চোখ তাদেরই শক্তিশালী করে তোলার জন্য গোটা পৃথিবী জুড়ে বিচরণ করে যাচ্ছে, যাদের অন্তর তাঁর প্রতি পুরোপুরি সমর্পিত। আপনি মূর্খের মতো কাজ করেছেন, আর এখন থেকে বারবার আপনাকে যুদ্ধ করতে হবে।”
10 এতে আসা সেই দর্শকের উপর রেগে গেলেন; তিনি এত রেগে গেলেন যে হনানিকে জেলখানায় পুরে দিলেন। একইসাথে, কিছু কিছু লোকের প্রতি আসা নিষ্ঠুর অত্যাচারও চালিয়েছিলেন।
