Story Behind the Song

The text is Henry Francis Lyte's metrical paraphrase of Psalm 67, first published in his 1834 collection The Spirit of the Psalms. Its prayer for God's face to shine and for all nations to praise him closely follows the language and missionary scope of the psalm. The Oasis Chorale recording appears to use a choral setting or adaptation credited to Johannes Brahms rather than one of the more common congregational hymn tunes.
