Refrain: Oh, come, angel band, Come and around me stand; Oh, bear me away on your snow white wings To my immortal home; Oh, bear me away on your snow white wings To my immortal home. I know I’m near the holy ranks Of friends and kindred dear— I brushed the dew on Jordan’s banks, The crossing must be near. I’ve almost gained my heav’nly home, My spirit loudly sings; Thy holy ones, behold, they come! I hear the noise of wings.

Angel Band by Oasis Chorale

Words by Jefferson HascallMusic by William B. BradburyWritten Tune ANGEL BAND

My latest sun is sinking fast,
My race is nearly run;
My strongest trials now are past,
My triumph is begun.

O come, angel band,
Come and around me stand;
O bear me away on your snow-white wings,
To my immortal home;
O bear me away on your snow-white wings,
To my immortal home.

I know I’m near the holy ranks
Of friends and kindred dear;
I brush the dew on Jordan’s banks,
The crossing must be near.

I’ve almost gained my heav’nly home,
My spirit loudly sings;
The holy ones, behold, they come!
I hear the noise of wings.

O bear my longing heart to Him
Who bled and died for me;
Whose blood now cleanses from all sin,
And gives me victory.

Story Behind the Song

“Angel Band,” also known by its first line “My latest sun is sinking fast,” is a nineteenth-century American gospel hymn with words by Methodist minister Jefferson Hascall. William B. Bradbury supplied the widely used tune, published in the early 1860s in the Sunday-school and gospel-song tradition. The hymn uses the imagery of Jordan as death’s crossing and angels bearing the believer home, and it later became especially beloved in shape-note, gospel, and bluegrass repertories.
