Story Behind the Song

Frances Ridley Havergal, an English devotional poet and hymn writer, wrote “Like a River Glorious” in the 1870s as a hymn of trust in God’s perfect peace. Its refrain draws especially on Isaiah 26:3, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee.” The tune most commonly associated with the hymn is WYE VALLEY, composed by James Mountain, who published many of Havergal’s hymns in evangelical collections.
