Story Behind the Song
Michael Joncas wrote "On Eagle's Wings" in 1979, drawing chiefly on Psalm 91 and related biblical imagery. He has recounted composing it after learning of the death of a friend's father, and it quickly became especially associated with funerals and services of consolation. The song has since become one of the most widely used contemporary Catholic hymns and has also appeared in a number of ecumenical hymnals.
