1 শয়তান ইস্রায়েলের বিরুদ্ধে উঠে পড়ে লেগে গেল এবং ইস্রায়েলে জনগণনা করতে দাউদকে প্ররোচিত করল।
2 তাই দাউদ যোয়াব ও সেনাবাহিনীর সেনাপতিদের বললেন, “যাও, তোমরা গিয়ে বের-শেবা থেকে দান পর্যন্ত ইস্রায়েলীদের সংখ্যা গণনা করো। পরে সে খবর নিয়ে আমার কাছে ফিরে এসো যেন আমি জানতে পারি তাদের সংখ্যা ঠিক কতজন।”
3 কিন্তু যোয়াব উত্তর দিলেন, “সদাপ্রভু যেন তাঁর সৈন্যদলকে কয়েকশো গুণ বাড়িয়ে তোলেন। হে আমার প্রভু মহারাজ, তারা সবাই কি আমার প্রভুর অধীনস্থ দাস নয়? তবে কেন আমার প্রভু এরকম কাজ করতে চাইছেন? তিনি কেন ইস্রায়েলের উপর অপরাধ বয়ে আনতে চাইছেন?”
4 রাজার আদেশে অবশ্য যোয়াবের কথা নাকচ হয়ে গেল; তাই যোয়াব গিয়ে গোটা ইস্রায়েল দেশ জুড়ে ঘুরে বেরিয়ে জেরুশালেমে ফিরে এলেন।
5 যোয়াব দাউদের কাছে যোদ্ধাদের সংখ্যা তুলে ধরেছিলেন: সমগ্র ইস্রায়েলে তরোয়াল চালাতে অভ্যস্ত এগারো লাখ ও যিহূদায় চার লাখ সত্তর হাজার জন লোক ছিল।
6 কিন্তু যোয়াব লোকগণনা করার সময় লেবি ও বিন্যামীন বংশের লোকদের ধরেননি, যেহেতু রাজার আদেশ তাঁর কাছে ন্যক্কারজনক বলে মনে হল।
7 এই আদেশটি ঈশ্বরের দৃষ্টিতেও মন্দ গণ্য হল; তাই তিনি ইস্রায়েলকে শাস্তি দিলেন।
8 তখন দাউদ ঈশ্বরকে বললেন, “এ কাজ করে আমি মহাপাপ করে ফেলেছি। এখন, আমি তোমাকে অনুরোধ জানাচ্ছি, তোমার দাসের এই অপরাধ মার্জনা করো। আমি মহামূর্খের মতো কাজ করে ফেলেছি।”
9 সদাপ্রভু দাউদের ভবিষ্যদ্‌বক্তা গাদকে বললেন,
10 “যাও, দাউদকে গিয়ে বলো, ‘সদাপ্রভু একথাই বলেন: আমি তোমার সামনে তিনটি বিকল্প রাখছি। সেগুলির মধ্যে একটিকে তুমি বেছে নাও, যেন আমি সেটিই তোমার বিরুদ্ধে প্রয়োগ করতে পারি।’ ”
11 অতএব গাদ দাউদের কাছে গিয়ে তাঁকে বললেন, “সদাপ্রভু একথাই বলেন: ‘একটি বিকল্প বেছে নাও:
12 তিন বছরের দুর্ভিক্ষ, তিন মাস ধরে তোমার শত্রুদের সামনে লোপাট হয়ে যাওয়া, এবং তাদের তরোয়াল হঠাৎ তোমার উপর এসে পড়া, অথবা তিন দিন সদাপ্রভুর তরোয়ালের সামনে পড়া—যে কয়দিন দেশে মহামারি ছড়াবে, এবং সদাপ্রভুর দূত ইস্রায়েলের এক-একটি অঞ্চল ছারখার করে দেবেন।’ তবে এখন, আপনিই ঠিক করুন যিনি আমাকে পাঠিয়েছেন, আমি তাঁকে কী উত্তর দেব।”
13 দাউদ গাদকে বললেন, “আমি খুব বিপদে পড়েছি। সদাপ্রভুর হাতেই পড়া যাক, কারণ তাঁর দয়া অত্যন্ত সুমহান; তবে আমি যেন মানুষের হাতে না পড়ি।”
14 তাই সদাপ্রভু ইস্রায়েলে এক মহামারি পাঠিয়ে দিলেন, এবং ইস্রায়েলের সত্তর হাজার লোক মারা পড়েছিল।
15 আর ঈশ্বর জেরুশালেম ধ্বংস করার জন্য এক দূত পাঠালেন। কিন্তু সেই দূত তা করতে যাওয়া মাত্র, সদাপ্রভু তা দেখেছিলেন ও সেই দুর্বিপাকের বিষয়ে তাঁর মন নরম হয়ে গেল এবং লোকজনকে ধ্বংস করতে যাওয়া সেই দূতকে তিনি বললেন, “যথেষ্ট হয়েছে! তোমার হাত টেনে নাও।” সদাপ্রভুর দূত তখন সেই যিবূষীয় অরৌণার খামারে দাঁড়িয়েছিলেন।
16 দাউদ উপরের দিকে তাকিয়ে দেখেছিলেন যে সদাপ্রভুর দূত হাতে খোলা তরোয়াল নিয়ে জেরুশালেমের দিকে তাক করে আকাশ ও পৃথিবীর মাঝখানে দাঁড়িয়ে আছেন। তখন দাউদ ও প্রাচীনেরা চটের কাপড় গায়ে দিয়ে মাটিতে উবুড় হয়ে পড়েছিলেন।
17 দাউদ ঈশ্বরকে বললেন, “যোদ্ধাদের সংখ্যা গণনা করার আদেশ কি আমিই দিইনি? আমি, এই পালকই পাপ ও অন্যায় করেছি। এরা তো শুধুই মেষ। এরা কী করেছে? হে আমার ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভু, আপনার হাত আমার ও আমার পরিবারের উপরেই নেমে আসুক, কিন্তু এই মহামারি আপনার প্রজাদের উপর আর যেন ছেয়ে না থাকে।”
18 তখন সদাপ্রভুর দূত গাদকে আদেশ দিলেন, যেন তিনি দাউদকে গিয়ে বলেন যে তাঁকে গিয়ে যিবূষীয় অরৌণার খামারে সদাপ্রভুর উদ্দেশে একটি যজ্ঞবেদি তৈরি করতে হবে।
19 তাই সদাপ্রভুর নামে গাদ যে কথা বললেন, সেকথার প্রতি বাধ্যতা দেখিয়ে দাউদ সেখানে চলে গেলেন।
20 গম ঝাড়তে ঝাড়তে অরৌণা পিছনে ফিরে সেই দূতকে দেখতে পেয়েছিলেন; তাঁর সাথে থাকা তাঁর চার ছেলে লুকিয়ে গেল।
21 তখন দাউদ সেখানে পৌঁছেছিলেন, ও অরৌণা তাঁকে দেখতে পেয়ে খামার ছেড়ে বেরিয়ে এসে মাটিতে মাথা ঠেকিয়ে দাউদকে প্রণাম করলেন।
22 দাউদ তাঁকে বললেন, “তোমার খামারের স্থানটি আমাকে নিতে দাও, আমি সদাপ্রভুর উদ্দেশে সেখানে একটি যজ্ঞবেদি নির্মাণ করব, যেন প্রজাদের উপর নেমে আসা মহামারি থেমে যায়। পুরো দাম নিয়ে তুমি সেটি আমার কাছে বিক্রি করো।”
23 অরৌণা দাউদকে বললেন, “আপনি সেটি নিয়ে নিন! আমার প্রভু মহারাজের যা ইচ্ছা হয় তিনি তাই করুন। দেখুন, আমি হোমবলির জন্য বলদগুলি, কাঠের জন্য শস্য মাড়াই কলগুলি, ও শস্য-নৈবেদ্যর জন্য গমও আপনাকে দেব। এসবই আমি আপনাকে দেব।”
24 কিন্তু রাজা দাউদ অরৌণাকে উত্তর দিলেন, “তা হবে না, আমি তোমাকে পুরো দামই দেব। যা কিছু তোমার, আমি তা সদাপ্রভুর জন্য নেব না, অথবা হোমবলির জন্য আমি এমন কিছু উৎসর্গ করব না যার জন্য আমাকে কোনও দাম দিতে হয়নি।”
25 অতএব দাউদ সেই স্থানটির জন্য অরৌণাকে ছয়শো শেকল সোনা মেপে দিলেন।
26 সদাপ্রভুর উদ্দেশে দাউদ সেখানে একটি যজ্ঞবেদি তৈরি করলেন এবং হোমবলি ও মঙ্গলার্থক বলি উৎসর্গ করলেন। তিনি সদাপ্রভুর নামে ডেকেছিলেন, ও সদাপ্রভুও হোমবলির বেদির উপর আকাশ থেকে আগুন নিক্ষেপ করে তাঁকে উত্তর দিলেন।
27 পরে সদাপ্রভু সেই দূতের সাথে কথা বললেন, এবং তিনি তাঁর তরোয়াল আবার খাপে ঢুকিয়ে নিয়েছিলেন।
28 সেই সময়, দাউদ যখন দেখেছিলেন যে যিবূষীয় অরৌণার খামারে সদাপ্রভু তাঁকে উত্তর দিয়েছেন, তখন তিনি সেখানে বলি উৎসর্গ করলেন।
29 মোশি মরুপ্রান্তরে সদাপ্রভুর যে সমাগম তাঁবুটি তৈরি করলেন, সেটি এবং হোমবলির সেই যজ্ঞবেদিটি সেই সময় গিবিয়োনে আরাধনার সেই উঁচু স্থানটিতেই ছিল।
30 কিন্তু দাউদ ঈশ্বরের কাছে খোঁজখবর নেওয়ার জন্য সেখানে যেতে পারেননি, কারণ তিনি সদাপ্রভুর দূতের সেই তরোয়ালকে তিনি ভয় পেয়েছিলেন।
