Story Behind the Song

The hymn comes from the German text “Schönster Herr Jesu,” first printed in the Münster Gesangbuch of 1677. Its melody is a Silesian folk tune published in the nineteenth century and later associated with the romantic but historically uncertain name “Crusaders’ Hymn.” In English it circulates both as “Beautiful Savior” and, in a different translation, as “Fairest Lord Jesus.”
