Story Behind the Song

These words form part of the Passion sequence in Part II of Handel's oratorio Messiah. Charles Jennens compiled the libretto almost entirely from Scripture, using the King James Bible and the Psalms from the Book of Common Prayer, and Handel composed the music in 1741. The cited text from Isaiah 53 is presented in Messiah as choruses meditating on the suffering of Christ.
