He, watching over Israel, slumbers not, nor sleeps.
Shouldst thou, walking in grief, languish, He will quicken thee.

Story Behind the Song
“He, Watching Over Israel” is a chorus from Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah, Op. 70, first performed at the Birmingham Festival in 1846. The oratorio’s text was drawn largely from the Old Testament, with German libretto work associated with Mendelssohn and Julius Schubring and an English version by William Bartholomew. This chorus is a consoling setting of psalm texts, especially the assurance that the Keeper of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.
