Story Behind the Song

George Herbert’s poem “Antiphon” was published posthumously in The Temple in 1633. Ralph Vaughan Williams set the text as the final movement of his Five Mystical Songs, composed between 1906 and 1911 for baritone, chorus, and orchestra or piano. The movement is often performed independently as a choral anthem under the title “Antiphon” or “Let all the world in every corner sing.”
