Night of Silence
Words by Daniel KantorMusic by Daniel KantorWritten 1984Tune NIGHT OF SILENCE
Cold are the people, winter of life,
We tremble in shadows this cold endless night,
Frozen in the snow lie roses sleeping,
Flowers that will echo the sunrise,
Fire of hope is our only warmth:
Weary, its flame will be dying soon.
Story Behind the Song
Daniel Kantor wrote "Night of Silence" as a contemporary Advent and Christmas song intended to partner with the traditional carol "Silent Night." Its melody and harmony are often sung alone first and then combined with "Silent Night" as a quodlibet or partner-song. The song is published by GIA Publications and has become common in modern Catholic, Lutheran, and ecumenical hymnals and choral arrangements.
