Lully, Lulla, Lullay-Stopford

Music by Unknown; traditional English melodyWritten Tune COVENTRY CAROL

Lully, lulla, thou little tiny child,
By by, lully, lullay.

O sisters too, how may we do,
For to preserve this day
This poor youngling for whom we sing,
By by, lully, lullay.

Herod the king, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day
His men of might in his own sight
All young children to slay.

That woe is me, poor child, for thee!
And ever morn and may
For thy parting neither say nor sing,
By by, lully, lullay.

Story Behind the Song

“Lully, Lulla, Lullay” is the opening lullaby refrain of the traditional English “Coventry Carol.” It comes from the Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors in the Coventry mystery plays, where the mothers of Bethlehem lament the slaughter of the Holy Innocents by Herod. The text is associated with a 16th-century play manuscript, and the haunting tune is traditionally transmitted under the name COVENTRY CAROL. Philip Stopford’s title refers to a modern choral setting or arrangement of this historic carol text.
