Story Behind the Song
Elaine Hagenberg's Love's Pure Light is a contemporary choral setting associated with the Christmas carol text of Silent Night, taking its title from the line "Son of God, love's pure light." The underlying carol Stille Nacht was written by Joseph Mohr and first sung in 1818 at Oberndorf, Austria, with music by Franz Xaver Gruber; John Freeman Young's English translation later became standard in English-speaking hymnals. Hagenberg's setting is a modern concert-choir treatment rather than the standard hymn tune STILLE NACHT.
