Story Behind the Song
Kim AndrΓ© Arnesen set a short anonymous World War II text often reported as having been found written on a wall by someone hiding from the Nazis, or after the war in a concentration-camp context. The words are a compact confession of faith in the face of absence, suffering, and silence. Arnesen's choral setting, titled "Even When He Is Silent," has become widely performed in contemporary sacred and concert choral repertoire.
