The King We Resist

From the beginning, man’s ruin has been this: to hear God’s word and then step aside from it. Adam hid among the trees after disobedience; Cain stood near the altar yet let envy master him; the kings of the earth rage against the Lord and think His rule a burden. Sin first whispers, then conceals, then strikes. As Theophilus recalls Adam’s confession, “And he said to Him, I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” Fear and hiding do not heal the wound made by rebellion.

Yet God does not abandon the earth to thorns, blood, and proud counsel. Isaiah saw the mountain of the Lord raised up, and Matthew shows the nations already beginning to stream toward it. The magi come from afar to worship, while Herod, like another Cain, is troubled by a righteous rival and turns his fear into violence. So the world is divided: some seek the Christ and bow, others seek to cast off His yoke. As Justin says, “The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against His Anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast their yoke from us.”

But His yoke is not tyranny; it is the road back from exile. To walk in His paths is to come out of hiding, to master envy before it conceives death, to lay down proud resistance, and to learn peace in the house of God. The child in Bethlehem is the promised King. Better to fall before Him now in repentance than to oppose Him and perish in the way.
