Dust, Breath, and Rest

Genesis sets man in a holy order he did not invent. We are formed from dust, yet not left as dust only: God breathes into man the breath of life. So our life is received, not possessed; and because it is received, it must be rendered back in obedience. Adam is placed in the garden not for idleness but "to dress it and to keep it." From the beginning, human life joins worship and work, gift and command.

The sanctified day of rest teaches the same lesson. God’s rest is not sloth but consecration. If He blessed a day, then man must learn to stop grasping, to give thanks, and to order his labor under God. A life with no holy restraint soon reaches for the forbidden tree. The first command in the garden shows that freedom is not license. Man is nourished by every good thing God gives, yet he must refuse what God forbids. Therefore piety is proved by limits gladly kept.

Woman also is given not as property or rival, but as a fitting companion, drawn near to man so that the household may become a school of charity and fidelity. As Tertullian says, "Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother, and he shall cleave unto his wife; and they two shall be one flesh. Genesis 2:23-24" Marriage is not a light contract but a bond for chastity, patience, and peace.

So let us keep the garden entrusted to us: the body with purity, the tongue with restraint, the household with faithfulness, and the day of rest with prayer and mercy. We are dust animated by God’s breath; let us not live as though we belonged to ourselves.
