The Fruit God Seeks
The first word of Scripture shows a world made by the command of God: light divided from darkness, each thing brought forth after its kind, all under His rule and judged good by Him. Man does not begin by making meaning for himself, but by receiving a world ordered by God. Therefore the blessed man in the psalm does not drift with the wicked; he is rooted in the law of the Lord, steady as a watered tree, bearing fruit in season.
Yet Isaiah warns that a people may keep the name of God while their hands are full of evil. The Maker of heaven and earth is not honored by assemblies joined to theft, bribery, and neglect of the weak. “Put away the evil of your doings from your souls; learn to do well, seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.” So the tree is known: not by leaves alone, but by fruit.
Matthew then declares who has come into this disordered world: the son of David, the son of Abraham, born as promised, Emmanuel. In Him the Creator has entered His creation, not to excuse barren lives, but to restore a people who do the will of God. “His delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law will he meditate day and night.” If Christ has truly been received, then let the mouth speak truth, the hands be clean of unjust gain, and the strong defend those who have no defender. The God who separated light from darkness still commands His people to leave darkness and walk as children of light.
