The experiment nobody else could afford
Ecclesiastes reads like a lab report from a man with unlimited funding. The Preacher had the money, power, and leisure to test every candidate for a satisfying life — pleasure, wine, building projects, gardens, music, wealth, wisdom itself — and he records the results without flinching: each delivered less than it promised, and death cancels the winnings anyway. What grips readers is the honesty. Scripture here permits the questions most religious books hurry past: why the wicked prosper, why hard work often enriches a fool who inherits it, what remains of anything time will erase. The book earns its comfort by refusing every cheap version of it first.
Vapor is a picture, not a verdict
The word tolling through the book literally means breath or mist. Renderings like vanity or meaninglessness can suggest the Preacher finds life worthless; the picture suggests something different — life is real but ungraspable, gone like fog by mid-morning, impossible to close a fist around. That reading fits the book's surprising counsel. Again and again the Preacher tells his reader to eat bread with gladness, enjoy the wife he loves, and take pleasure in his work, receiving each day from God's hand precisely because no one can secure the next one. Ecclesiastes is not against joy; it is against the illusion of control.

The book does not argue in a straight line; it circles. The Preacher keeps returning to the same landmarks — toil, time, death, joy — and each pass adds pressure. The famous poem opening chapter 3 grants that everything has its season, then immediately asks who can ever know the season. The closing chapters accelerate toward an unforgettable poem in which old age arrives like a great house shutting down — keepers trembling, windows dimming, the almond tree blossoming white — before a second voice steps forward to end the case with reverence and coming judgment.

The early church did not shelve Ecclesiastes as an embarrassment; it prescribed the book. Jerome produced one of his first Bible commentaries on it, having read it in Rome with the young widow Blesilla to loosen her grip on the world's promises. Gregory of Nyssa preached through its opening chapters, arguing that the Preacher's demolition of life under the sun was the first step in lifting the soul's gaze above the sun. In the teaching sequence Origen described, Ecclesiastes stood in the middle of Solomon's three books: Proverbs trained conduct, Ecclesiastes detached the heart from what passes, and only then was a reader thought ready for the Song of Songs.
