In Timothy 1:9, Paul says, "Who saved us"—what tense?—"past, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before times eternal." Another one: "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He"—what tense?—"past, saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit." So there is a past phase that we have been saved.
