This word is a little bit of a weak translation. The King James says "proving." So there's two different ways you can prove something. You can prove it by putting it to the test so it proves itself, or you can make a demonstration to prove a point about something. The Greek word here is "dochomazo," which means to test, and then to approve, to discern, to examine, and then to like.
