It's how much we give up, not how much we get. He says, "Husbands, love your wives just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for her." So our model is Christ's love. And God goes beyond that and gives us another thing to help us to gauge whether we have an idea of what love is. And he says that Christ's love caused him to give himself, or to sacrifice himself, for his church. And so love is defined by sacrifice. It's how much we give up, not how much we get. The sacrifice is not a loss.
It's an investment. We give up something because there's something greater. There's more important. There's the love of God, the favor of God, that is what we really want. And so we give up other things for it because they're worthless in comparison.
