The sword. Here he comes, the prisoner's to release, in Satan's punishment. The gates of frenzy forever the iron vessel shields becomes earth. Still, still. The hearts of men, while passions are hushed and souls are attending. God is speaking, hearts are bending.
Still, still, still Jesus comes to the hearts of men. Storms still gets way to hear the angels sing. Still through the globe and skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled. And still their heavenly music flows over all the weary world.
Above its sad and lonely plain they bend on hovering wings. And ever o'er its battle. Angels sing.
And here beneath life's crushing low whose forms are bending low. Whose world along that blinding way with painful steps and slow. Look now for glan and golden hearts come swiftly on the wing. Oh, rest beside the weary road and hear the angels sing.
For though the days are hasting on, thy prophet thoughts foretold. When brilliant years come 'round the age of gold. Over all the earth its anxious land. And though. Death the signs glory stream from heaven afar.
Heavenly hosting Hallelujah, Christ the Savior is born. Christ the Savior is born.
Father's light, holy night, Son of God, loft your heart. Radiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace.
Jesus Lord at thy birth.
Jesus Lord at thy birth. Father's light, holy night, wondrous star, lend thy light. With the angels let us sing.
Hallelujah to our King. Christ the Savior is born. Christ the Savior is born.
Well, good evening. Good evening. Let's try that again. Good evening. Good evening. One more time. Good evening. Good evening. Thank you. Welcome.
I just want to make sure you're here because you're happy and happy because you're here.
1992-ish, I was teaching at Benchmark Christian School, which is a school of Serpent's Bird Christian Fellowship. And one of my precious memories of that time was the one Christmas schools do gift things. And one of my gifts was a Scrooge scrapbook.
There's probably a few people here that helped put that together. It is a precious memory. I don't know always what to think about it. I just told one of my coworkers, "I still think I'm a Scrooge that has yet to be unscrooged."
There's a lot about Christmas that just frustrates me. But there are many things about Christmas time that I enjoy.
Bear with me while I read you a short story. I should say, bear with my imagination.
Young enterprising Joseph of Nazareth stepped through the string of blinking lights strung over the back door. He walked into the kitchen brushing one last curled wood shaving from his must-dark hair. His wife of a few short months, great with child, was standing over the pot of steaming mutton. It was only weeks, if not days, till her child would be born.
The sparkling tree stood brightly in the living room with a bright star gracing the top and brightly wrapped gifts resting expectantly at its base. "Mary," Joseph's anxious voice interrupted Mary's peaceful mutton musings, "Our taxes are due, the baby is due, and a reservation for Bethlehem Inn is the 24th of this month, Christmas Eve. I think we should leave early tomorrow morning to allow plenty of time in case of accidents or traffic jams.
We can settle all these matters in one efficient trip if we work things just right. I've closed up the woodshop and put out a sign that says, 'Closed till after New Year's. You know, this is the very first Christmas, and we must set a good example for all the coming generations all over the world." "Oh, Joseph," Mary spoke calmly and lovingly as she turned to welcome him home with a big smile, "I'm sure you're right. This just looks so, well, so big and so, so busy.
Certainly, though, I will follow your lead and be ready in the morning."
Bright and early on December 18th, Joseph and Mary set out for Bethlehem with the bright stars twinkling overhead, the glittering trees blinking through each of the neighbor's windows, and Duro the donkey leading fresh hoof tracks in the soft light snow.
Late on the seventh day, they stood in line at the Bethlehem Inn waiting to fill the reservation. It had been a long, rugged trip touring around Samaria. Six days were weary traveling and one restful Sabbath. Oh, for a calm, peaceful rest tonight.
But wait, what was the inn clerk saying? "Sorry, sir, we're tight full. The bedrooms are double booked, and the lobby is zipper to zipper with sleeping bags. That disturbing tax mandate and the excitement of this first Christmas has us all messed up. It's been absolutely crazy around here." "But," Joseph protested, "Oh, you're Joseph and Mary. Well, follow me. I have just the spot for you. You'll be needing these cozy accommodations. There's space and privacy like none in the main house. And what's more, it's the only place the shepherds will be able to get to you before morning." "Oh, Joseph," squealed Mary, "a manger. It's just the way I always felt it should be."
Probably one of the most frustrating things to me about Christmas is not so much all the wonderful, pretty things that we do, but it's the desperate attempt we make to associate them with our Lord and Savior. There are many things about the season that I'm glad for. Time off work, actually giving gifts, it's kind of fun, can be frustrating.
And sometimes for some people, even shopping can be exciting. For me, shopping between Thanksgiving and New Year's, it's just I try to stay away from it. But some people just love it. I can tell. When I go there, they're just all over the place.
One of the things that really has kind of stood out to me this particular year as I thought about some of this and considered my own musings and whatever you want to call them is a verse in Matthew chapter 1 says, "Joseph," this is the real story, by the way, "Joseph, her husband, being a just man and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream saying, 'Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take you, Mary, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
And she will bring forth a son, and you will call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.'" When I think about Jesus coming, the one thing that has really impressed me is the fact that he came for one reason.
It was to save us from our sins. And I pondered a little bit what that meant. And I'm going to remind you of three accounts that I think capture, I guess, what I consider the essence of Christ's coming. I won't say Christmas. Christmas has a lot of other things and tinsels with it. But Christ's coming is captured, I think, in these three events. The one happened in October of 2006, the nickel mines murder.
And the thing that was left over the world was the forgiveness of the people that had their children murdered. That's what left the impression.
The next one was in October of 2019. And I think this was mentioned here. Most of you probably know about it, where a state police lady accidentally shot somebody who she thought was in her apartment. And at the trial, the brother of that murdered man asked the judge, "Can I hug this lady?" He says, "All I want you to know, all I want you to feel is the love of Christ. I don't want you to go to jail. I don't want you to suffer."
Completely forgave her. And the judge and the brother gave the woman a hug. And you can still see that if you look up the right news thing. More recently, December of this year, and I don't know how many of you might have heard about this one, a Texas officer responded to a call. I think it was in a parking lot somewhere.
And when he got there, there was this domestic brawl between a man and his wife over an affair that he was having with a woman that was also in the parking lot. And so this officer went up to talk to him, and the guy promptly pulled out his gun and shot him dead and then shot himself.
At the funeral, this officer's daughter gave a little testimony. And I would like to read that to you because I think it, again, captures what Jesus came to do, how Jesus came to affect you and I. And I think this is just an absurd.
I remember having conversations with my dad about him losing friends and officers in the line of duty. I've heard all the stories you can think of, but I've always had such a hard time with how the suspect is dealt with. Not that I don't think there should be justice served, but my heart always ached for those who don't know Jesus, their actions being a reflection of that. I was always told that I would feel differently if it happened to me. But as it's happened to my own father, I think I still feel the same. There has been anger, sadness, grief, and confusion.
And part of me wishes I could despise the man who did this to my father. But I can't get any part of my heart to hate him. All I can find is myself hoping and praying for this man to truly know Jesus.
I thought this might change if the man continued to live. But when I heard the news that he was in stable condition, part of me was relieved. My prayer is that someday down the road, I'd get to spend some time with the man who shot my father, not to scream at him, not to yell at him, not to scold him, simply to tell him about Jesus.
I guess I feel like that's rare.
And I sense the rarity in my own heart when I see injustices like that.
And tonight, I hope that the things that we hear, the things that we sing, will call us to respond to why Jesus really came. The whole world has spent thousands of years being unjust to his Father. And he came to forgive us, to forgive all of mankind.
And there are two things, there are two times where Jesus mentioned about this thing of forgiveness. I really think his coming and forgiveness are all the same package, if you want to call it that, they're just same essence. But when he gave us the prayer to pray, "Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors," his comment right at the end was, "If you do not forgive men their trespasses, yours won't be forgiven." And when he told that big story about the unjust steward, who the king forgave a lifetime of expenses and went out and would not forgive his fellow man of just a day's expenses, he said, "My Father will forgive you if you forgive others.
But if you don't, he won't forgive you." Jesus came to offer us all complete forgiveness. And if we do not respond to that forgiveness and doing that to others, we have missed the whole point of his coming. Let's bow our heads for prayer.
God, I thank you for your Son, for sending him to earth as one of us to demonstrate how we are to relate to our fellow man. God, give us the grace, the desire, the new heart that will not look at anyone without wanting them to know the love of Jesus, the forgiveness of Jesus by the way we treat them.
God, bless our presentations this evening. Lord, draw our hearts to you. May all that we do give you praise and adoration for your gift to us. In Jesus' name, amen.
I will put a list up on the board of events. If any of them are wrong, let me know. And when I get done, I will ask if there's anyone that hasn't told me that wants to do something, and we will add you.
We'll start with Glendale & Sons and then have Glendale & Family.
And Roxanne has a co-op group, and Kendra has a co-op group that will be singing.
And then Marvin Waiter will come up and read us the Luke story. And then after that, I would like to have two congregational songs. One of them can be standing.
After the song, there is a men's group, a ladies' group, and then a mixed group.
Any corrections, any additions, anyone that has something else they would like to do for us? Okay. We'll go ahead and proceed with that and see what time it is when we're finished.
Long ago in a Bethlehem manger, long ago our Lord was born. Came to earth a lonely stranger, came to earth on Christmas morn. Sing we now in joyful chorus, Christ is born, Christ is born. Sing we now in joyful chorus, Christ is born, Christ is born.
Long ago he died to save us, crucified upon the tree. Long ago he died and gave us life and immortality.
Sing we now in grateful chorus, salvation free, salvation free. Sing we now in grateful chorus, salvation free, salvation free.
Soon our Lord will come in glory. Come proclaim that happy day, day of sweet redemption story. God will wipe our tears away. Sing we now in joyful chorus, Christ will come, Christ will come. Sing we now in joyful chorus, Christ will come, Christ will come.
O little one sweet, o little one mild, thy father's purpose has fulfilled. Thou came from heaven to mortal care. Heep home to be with us poor man.
O little one sweet, o little one mild.
O little one sweet, o little one mild, with joy thou hast the whole world filled. Thou came as dear from heaven only to bring England comfort in their gain.
O little one sweet, o little one mild.
O little one sweet, o little one mild, help us to do as thou hast willed. Lord, behold, belongs to thee. Ah, keep us in our dear roost deep.
O little one sweet, o little one mild.
The shepherds saw in eastern skies star of promise shining bright. Ever gleaming, gleaming, ever will its bright hands hold gentle light. Blessed Savior, Son of Mary, in a stable he was born. Holy angels watching o'er him on that blessed Christmas morn.
In David's city ere the dawn, in a manger Christ was born. Holy angels watching o'er him on that blessed Christmas morn. Blessed Savior, Son of Mary, in a stable he was born. Holy angels watching o'er him on that blessed Christmas morn.
Of noble royal lineage, house of David, prince and king, came our Savior infant Jesus, and his praises we will sing. Blessed Savior, Son of Mary, in a stable he was born. Holy angels watching o'er him on that blessed Christmas morn.
To God on high our glory be, thus the joyest pain ran. Ever hail our Savior's advent, peace on earth, goodwill to man. Blessed Savior, Son of Mary, in a stable he was born. Holy angels watching o'er him on that blessed Christmas morn.
O come, O come, bear you well, and ransom captive Israel! Let mourn tin only exhale, here until thy Son of God appear. Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee all Israel.
O come, now, Rod of Death, heep grief, thine own from Satan's tyranny. From depths of hell thy beep, heep, O Save, and give them victory o'er the grave. Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee all Israel.
O come, now, day spring, come and cheer. Our spirits find thy nethern here. Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death's dark shadows vaunt to fly. Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee all Israel.
O come, now, key of David, come, and open wide our heavenly home. Think safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery. Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee all Israel.
Amen.
Baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem long ago on a winter night. In the palm stillness, stars in the heavens bathed the village and stable in light. Flocks were grazing and shepherds listening there on Bethlehem's quiet hill. Angels from heaven came to them singing, singing carols and songs of goodwill.
Come to Bethlehem, come to Bethlehem, angels sang in the starry light. Worship the Christ, jostling, Hallelujah! Come to Bethlehem's stable tonight.
We, three kings of Orient are, bearing gifts we travel afar. Field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star. O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright. Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light.
Born a king on Bethlehem's plain, gold I bring to crown him again. King forever ceasing, never o'er for us all to reign. O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright. Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light.
Glorious now behold him arise, king as God and sacrifice. Hallelujah, hallelujah, sung through the earth and skies. O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright. Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light.
O come, little children, all come and behold. The manger is raining, the faith has abhorred. Bless Mary and Joseph, and over him there. And shepherds are kneeling deep, lowly in prayer. And now to the manger what gift shall we bring? To show our great love for the heavenly King.
He cares for no treasure of earth or of marks. Oh, give him devotion, oh, give him your heart.
Well, good evening, everyone. Blessings to all of you. Good to see you all here.
Going to read Luke's account of the birth of our Lord. And as always, when the angels join in the I want you all to join with the angels whenever they make that wonderful proclamation.
I'm going to be reading out of the Amplified. In those days, it occurred that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole Roman Empire should be registered. This was the first enrollment, and it was made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
And all the people were going to be registered, each to his own city or town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the town of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the lineage and family of David.
To be enrolled with Mary, his espoused married wife, who was about to become a mother. And while they were there, the time came for her delivery. And she gave birth to her son, her firstborn, and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room or place for them in the inn.
And in that vicinity, there were shepherds living out under the open sky in the field, watching in shifts over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord flashed and shone all about them, and they were terribly frightened.
But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all people. For to you is born this day in the town of David a Savior, who is Christ, the Messiah, the Lord.
And this will be a sign for you by which you will recognize him. You will find after searching a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." Then suddenly, there appeared with the angel an army of the troops of heaven, a heavenly knighthood, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men."
When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing, or saying that has come to pass which the Lord has made known to us." So they went with haste and by searching found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known what had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it were astounded and marveled at what the shepherds told them. But Mary was keeping within herself all these things, sayings, weighing and pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, just as it had been told them.
That's the real story.
It's the real story.
So I was read this again. I was just thinking, just how far did Christ humble himself to dwell among us?
I'd just like to mention a few real-life ways he did this.
You know, the Creator was formed in the womb of the woman he created.
The Creator was nursed by the woman he created.
The Creator of the universe was laid in a slobbery feed trough. And Harvey would understand that if you ever watched a cow eat grain and whatever, they just slobber all over the place. I don't think this was a swept-out trough that Jesus was laid in.
But the Creator of the universe was laid in one of those. The Creator who made everything made himself nothing. The Creator made himself very small. Think of a tiny seed implanted into the womb.
The Creator made himself dependent upon lungs, a larynx, and legs. The Creator experienced hunger and thirst. The Creator went through all the normal stages of development. The Creator was taught to walk, to stand, to wash his face, and dress himself.
His muscles grew stronger. His hair grew longer. The Creator's voice cracked when he passed through puberty.
Yes, the Creator truly became human just like us. He understands every aspect of our lives completely, every part of it. There is nothing at all in your life that he does not understand.
After his parents well, we know the story. They went to Jerusalem, and they went home after that. And lo and behold, Jesus wasn't with them. And so they tried to find him among their friends and whatnot, relatives, I suppose.
And so they finally went back to Jerusalem. And how long did it take them to finally find him? Three days.
Took them three days.
But after his parents found him in Jerusalem, talking to the elders and teachers, it says, "He went with them to Nazareth and was what? Subject to them or obedient to them." So we have the Creator being subject to the created.
How much did he humble himself?
My plea is, may we adore and worship Jesus, not just in word, but by our lives. Now the created being subject or obedient to the Creator. That is my challenge for all of us. We're going to finally, after all of that, be subject to the Creator that created every one of us.
What a blessing. I honestly cannot wrap my mind around the fact that God himself would come down and dwell among us as he did. May God bless you.
462.
To me, the most incomprehensible aspect of Jesus' incarnation is in verse two of this song.
So soul who can turn from the wonder that Jesus, the Son, chose to humble himself, leave his glory and come to save a creation that dead with swords burnt his love, but his flames from the day he was born.
But his love quite amazes the faithful who see what his soul incarnation affords you and me. His heart as a human has plainly shown. None can well live in flesh when the heart is his throne. How we thank, praise, and bless our great Savior who came, showed us life, shed his blood, and redeemed us from shame.
Ascended on high, giving gifts to men so the whole world would see all his life lived again.
Give us hearts that enthrone him. Our Father, we pray. In repentance unfaith, help us live day by day. In us, by thy Spirit, bring forth new birth that once more men may see Jesus' life lived on earth. 1001A. Let's stand and sing. 1001A.
Tenors, take the lead on verse two. Six parts on verse three.
So soul, sing hallelujah, praise him, let our life forevermore. The prince of peace, of glory, give his blessed name adore. With kings above your arms, pay to him who in a manger lay. With Judah's shepherds pray against the angels sung today.
Tenors. Sing hallelujah, praise the Lord, sing with a cheerful voice. Exalt our God with one accord, and in his name rejoice. Near seats to sing the ransom bowls, praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost until in realms of endless light your praises shall unite.
There we do all eternity, forever-ending days shall sing in perfect harmony to God, our Savior's praise. Christ hath redeemed us by his blood and made us kings and priests to God for us, for us. Hallelujah, praise ye the Lord all day.
Let's see this.
I had always wanted sometime to have a men's group and have young boys sing the first tenor. And so I found this little arrangement, and I thought this would be interesting. So that's what we did.
Come, ye shepherds, come, ye shepherds, come, all ye shepherds, ye children of shepherds, come, ye bring drinkings to yon heavenly birth. For Christ the Lord unto us is given, give God for Saviors, and down from heaven fear not ye him.
Hasten then, hasten to Bethlehem, hasten to Bethlehem's stall, there to see heaven descend to us all. With holy feeling there, holy dealing, we will adorn a mountain for the worship, the worship, the angels and shepherds together, we singing this, singing their Savior from all earthly woe.
While angels winging his praises, singing hands' echoes ringing, peace on earth bringing.
Goodwill to men, goodwill to men, all men.
All holy night, all holy night, all holy night, God to this world is descending.
Earth's reign of darkness is ending.
Salvation Jesus has brought. All holy night, all holy night, all holy night.
All holy night, all holy night, angels to all men are singing.
Hope to the world they are bringing.
Peace to all men has been brought.
All holy night, all holy night, all holy night.
Angels, we have heard on high singing sweetly there, and the mountains in reply echoing their share. Shepherds, why this truth hath leaked? Why these words of peace and cheer? What great brightness did you see? What black tidings hear?
Come to Bethlehem and sing him whom angels sing. Come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord the King. See him in a manger laid whom the angels praise above. Mary Joseph, glad you're reigned. While we praise in love.
Good people, all this Christmas time, consider well and bear in mind what our good God has for us done in sending his beloved Son. With Mary holy we should pray to God with love this Christmas day. In Bethlehem upon the morn, there was a blessed messiah born.
New Bethlehem, the children's give, thou wilt abound that feeding sheep. Doomed that angels did appear which might thou show of birth in great fear. Prepare and go the angels said to Bethlehem and be nought of worry. For there you'll find this happy morn, a princely bake sweet Jesus born.
With thankful hearts and joyful mind, the shepherds went the bake to find. And as God's angels has foretold, they did our Savior Christ behold. Within a manger he was laid, and by his side the virgin maid, attending to the Lord of light who came on earth to end all strife.
Angel singing in the sky, God's Son to us is given, and to earth is coming nigh, and man shall have salvation.
Gloria Hosanna in excelsis. Let all hearts with bringing song put forth the loud thanksgiving. Grace has triumphed over wrong, and men shall gain true living.
Gloria Hosanna in excelsis. Sing the angel song again, prolong the heavenly chorus. Peace on earth with will to mend, love's King is reigning o'er us.
Gloria Hosanna in excelsis.
Bring a torch, bring a torch, bring a torch to the blood of the. Bring a torch, a torch and run. It is Jesus Christ is born. Now he's calling out, out. Beautiful is the Father, out, out. Beautiful is the child, beautiful is the child.
Beating strong and now busy, you see, he's ringing the speech so loud. Sighs the angels and hear the cradle's astuous waves. Let all Jesus howl, howl. Beautiful is the Mother, out, out. Beautiful is the child, the child, the child. Beautiful is the child, the child, it is the child. The angels, the angels, the child, they shall receive.
The angels, the angels, the child, they shall receive.
This is the case, this is the case, this is the case. It's to bring to God the sons of Mary. So bring him incense gold and burn them burns and think to God. The King of kings salvation brings the loving hearts enthroning.
This is the case, this is the case, this is the case. It's to bring to God the sons of Mary.
This is as you bring to life, as you bring to life, as you bring to life, as you bring to life, the heavens are cloudless bright. Come back to the manger bed. Jesus shines on the star, out, out. Beautiful is the Father, out, out. Beautiful is the child, beautiful is the child. Beautiful is the child, beautiful is the child. Beautiful is the child, beautiful is the child
for. To us a child is born. Unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder. Unto us a child is born, and his name is James. Shall we call? Wonder, wonder comes to go. Tell her of mighty God, the mighty God and Father, the Prince of Peace.
For unto us a child is born. Unto us a son is born. A son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder. Unto us a child is born, and his name is James. Shall we call? Wonder, wonder comes to go. Tell her of mighty God, the mighty God and Father, the Prince, the Prince, the Prince, the Prince of Peace.
Any comments, inspirations, testimonies? Or does anyone else have something you would just love to share yet?
Well, I was blessed, encouraged. Thank you all for putting time and energy into sharing us songs.
We will stand and have a closing prayer. And then, John, you can lead us in a closing song. And while we're singing that song, the ushers would like some help maybe getting some chairs downstairs for refreshments. And after that song, you can consider yourself dismissed.
So let's stand for prayer. Brian Otto, would you lead us in a prayer?
First off, I'd like to thank you for the opportunity to gather this way. Thank you for your many questions. Thank you especially for the birth of Jesus and the coming of his helpers.
Thank you for the opportunity to sing together.
Thank you. Blessed are those of you who have chosen to pray together.
