Story Behind the Song
The text is Psalm 130, the penitential psalm traditionally known by its Latin incipit, “De profundis” (“Out of the depths”). Robert H. Young set the traditional English wording, beginning “Out of the deep have I called unto thee, O Lord,” as a choral sacred work. The psalm has long been used in Christian liturgy as a prayer of repentance and hope in God’s mercy.
