O Radiant Dawn

Words by Anonymous ancient Advent O Antiphon ('O Oriens'), with Isaiah 9:2; English liturgical translationMusic by James MacMillanWritten

O Radiant Dawn,
Splendour of eternal Light,
Sun of Justice:
come, shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death.

Isaiah had prophesied,
"The people who walked in darkness have seen the great light;
upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone."

Amen.

Story Behind the Song

James MacMillan's O Radiant Dawn is a short choral motet setting the Advent 'O Antiphon' for December 21, traditionally known in Latin as 'O Oriens.' It belongs to his Strathclyde Motets, a group of liturgical choral pieces associated with the University of Strathclyde Chamber Choir and Catholic worship. The text prays for Christ, the dawning light, to come to those in darkness and incorporates Isaiah's prophecy of a great light.
