Story Behind the Song
“Selig sind die Toten” is a German sacred motet by Heinrich Schütz, catalogued as SWV 391. It was published in Schütz’s 1648 collection Geistliche Chormusik, a landmark anthology of German motets demonstrating learned contrapuntal writing joined to clear textual expression. The text is the beatitude for the faithful dead from Revelation 14:13 in the Luther Bible, making it a longstanding funeral and memorial motet in the Lutheran choral tradition.
