Words by Biblical text, Psalm 8; English translator unknownMusic by Felix Mendelssohn

Lord, our Creator, how excellent Thy name in all the nations!
Thou fillest heaven with Thy glory.

Out of the mouths of infants and children
hast Thou ordained praise because of Thy foes,
that Thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers,
the moon and the stars which Thou hast ordained,
what is man, that Thou art mindful of him?
and the son of man, that Thou visitest him?

Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels,
and hast crowned him with glory and worship.
Thou hast made him to have dominion over the works of Thy hands;
Thou hast put all things under his feet:

All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
the fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea,
and whatsoever walketh through the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Creator, how excellent Thy name in all the nations!
Thou fillest heaven with Thy glory.

Story Behind the Song

This appears to be an English-language choral setting or translation of Mendelssohn's sacred music based on Psalm 8, addressed to the Lord as creator and ruler of creation. Mendelssohn wrote a number of psalm settings and motets for choir, often intended for liturgical or concert use rather than congregational hymn singing. The exact English text and publication history of the title "Lord, Our Creator" are not certain from the supplied information.
