Coventry Carol

Written Tune COVENTRY CAROL

Lully, lullay, thou little tiny child,
By by, lully, lullay.

O sisters too, how may we do
For to preserve this day
This poor youngling for whom we sing,
By by, lully, lullay?

Herod the king, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day
His men of might, in his own sight,
All young children to slay.

That woe is me, poor child, for thee,
And ever mourn and say,
For thy parting neither say nor sing,
By by, lully, lullay.

Story Behind the Song

“Coventry Carol” comes from the Coventry mystery plays, specifically the Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors, where it was sung by the mothers of Bethlehem before Herod’s slaughter of the innocents. The text is associated with a 16th-century pageant manuscript, traditionally dated to 1534, while the surviving tune was preserved in later copies. Its haunting minor-mode lullaby character has made it one of the best-known English Christmas carols connected to the Holy Innocents.
