Chapter 14, Part 1: What We Would Rather Not See

Lesson Transcript

Chapter 14, "What We Would Rather Not See." I was recently browsing through a Christian bookstore when I noticed one or two books concerning the dangerous spread of "Eastern religions." How incredibly blind we Western Christians are, I thought to myself. Christianity is an Eastern religion. Now, I'm not saying that we shouldn't be concerned about the spread of pagan Eastern religions; I'm only saying that Christianity is an Eastern religion too.

And we will never be able to get into the mindset of the Apostles and the New Testament Christians until we recognize this. Rudyard Kipling wrote the often-quoted words, "East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet." Without a doubt, Eastern thinking often stands in stark contrast to Western rationalism. The Eastern mind is much quicker than its Western counterpart to grasp allegorical truths that are prefigured by actual historical events.

The Eastern mind will often believe incomprehensible spiritual truths that the Western rationalistic mind rejects. Another difference is the Western tendency toward legalism. The genius of the Romans, who were Westerners, was law. Their legal system was far superior to any of the Gentile law systems that preceded them.
