Story Behind the Song

“Veni, Veni, Emmanuel” is the Latin Advent hymn best known in English as “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” Its text is a metrical paraphrase of the medieval Great O Antiphons, sung at Vespers in the final days before Christmas. The Latin hymn is documented in the 1710 Cologne collection Psalteriolum Cantionum Catholicarum, and the familiar tune was published by Thomas Helmore in the nineteenth century, adapted from a medieval processional melody.
