Sing to the Lord

Words by Psalm 96 and Psalm 98; English translator/adaptor unknownMusic by Johann Pachelbel

Sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth.

Sing to the Lord, and bless his name;
proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the nations,
his wonders among all peoples.

Sing to the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvelous things;
his right hand and his holy arm
have gotten him the victory.

Story Behind the Song

This is not a congregational hymn with a standard tune name, but a Baroque sacred choral work attributed to Johann Pachelbel, using biblical psalm texts that call the people of God to sing a new song to the Lord. Pachelbel, best known today for his Canon in D, was a Lutheran organist and composer whose sacred vocal music was written for church use in late-17th-century Germany. English performances commonly present the work under the title “Sing to the Lord,” translating or adapting the German biblical text “Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied.”
