Story Behind the Song
“Pilgrims’ Hymn” is a sacred choral anthem by Stephen Paulus with words by poet Michael Dennis Browne. It comes from Paulus’s one-act opera The Three Hermits, based on Leo Tolstoy’s short story of the same name. The piece became one of Paulus’s best-known works and was notably sung at the funerals of U.S. presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.
