Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you:
not as the world giveth, give I unto you.
Let not your heart be troubled,
neither let it be afraid.
Story Behind the Song
"Peace" is an anonymous Shaker song preserved from the Shaker musical tradition, rather than a hymn with a known individual author or composer. Shaker communities produced a large body of simple spiritual songs, many of them transmitted in manuscript collections and associated with communal worship and dance. The modern choral setting commonly performed today is an arrangement by Kevin Siegfried, but that arrangement is not the authorship of the underlying song.
