Our Father
Words by Traditional liturgical text; The Lord's PrayerMusic by Nikolai Kedrov Sr.Written c. 1922Tune OTCHE NASH
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Story Behind the Song
Nikolai Kedrov Sr. was a Russian singer and composer associated with the Russian Orthodox choral tradition and the Kedrov Quartet. His a cappella setting of the Lord's Prayer, commonly known by its Church Slavonic title "Otche Nash," became one of his best-known sacred choral works. The text is the traditional liturgical form of the prayer taught by Jesus in the Gospels.
