Magnificat
Words by Traditional Latin biblical text (Luke 1:46, Vulgate)Music by Jacques BerthierTune MAGNIFICAT ANIMA MEA
Magnificat, magnificat,
magnificat anima mea Dominum.
Magnificat, magnificat,
magnificat anima mea.
Story Behind the Song
This is one of the short meditative chants associated with the Taizé Community in France. Jacques Berthier composed many such ostinato-style songs for Taizé worship, using brief biblical or liturgical texts in Latin and other languages so they could be sung by international congregations. The text is the opening line of Mary’s song, the Magnificat, from Luke 1:46.
