Story Behind the Song

Anthony J. Showalter wrote the hymn after hearing from two former pupils whose wives had died. In letters of consolation he quoted Deuteronomy 33:27, “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms,” and the phrase suggested the refrain. Showalter asked Elisha A. Hoffman to supply stanzas, and the hymn was published in 1887.
