Story Behind the Song
“Indodana” is a traditional isiXhosa passion song from South Africa; its title means “The Son” and the text refers to the Son of God being taken and crucified, with Mary weeping. It has become widely known in international choral circles through the arrangement by South African musicians Michael Barrett and Ralf Schmitt. The underlying song is traditional, so its original author, composer, and date are not documented.
