Story Behind the Song
Josef Rheinberger composed Abendlied as a sacred motet for six-part mixed choir when he was a teenager in 1855, later revising it in 1873. The text is the disciples’ plea to the risen Christ on the road to Emmaus: “Abide with us, for it is toward evening.” It was published as No. 3 of Rheinberger’s Drei geistliche Gesänge, Op. 69, and has become his best-known choral work.
