Story Behind the Song

“Veni Sancte Spiritus” is the medieval Pentecost sequence often called the “Golden Sequence,” sung in the Western church as a prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Its authorship is uncertain, with common traditional attributions to Pope Innocent III and to Stephen Langton. Jacques Berthier wrote a simple, repetitive Taizé setting for the community’s meditative prayer, pairing the Latin refrain with short verses suitable for congregational and multilingual worship.
