Thine own from Satan's tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,

Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death's dark shadows put to flight.

O come, Thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heavenly home;

Story Behind the Song

The hymn is a metrical version of the Great O Antiphons, ancient Advent antiphons sung before and after the Magnificat in the final days before Christmas. John Mason Neale translated the Latin text into English in the mid-19th century, and Thomas Helmore paired it with a plainsong melody he published in 1851. The tune is now known as VENI EMMANUEL and has become one of the most widely sung Advent hymns in English-speaking churches.
